Expository Writing

Objectives: The primary objective of this course is to enhance language skills and develop critical thinking. Moreover, to enable learners in improving their written and oral communication skills so that they can effectively apply their learned skills in everyday life and usage of language in context.

Contents: 1. Use of Grammar in Context: Modals, types of modal verbs of probability, degrees of certainty. 2. Basic Sentence Structure: Sentence patterns, clause structure, phrase types. 3. Reading Skills: Tone and attitude of the author, emotion words, distinguishing fact vs opinion. 4. Essay Writing: Steps in writing an essay, outlining, formal essay structure. 5. Descriptive Essay: Structure and composition. 6. Narrative Writing: Conventions, thesis statement, organization. 7. Expository Essays: Definitions, comparison and contrast, classification, exemplification. 8. Position Essays: Issue definition, position, convincing argumentation, counterarguments. 9. Rhetorical Strategies: Idea development, rhetorical devices, comparing texts. 10. Idea generation: Flow charts, mind maps, note taking. 11. Oral Communication: Social and academic notes, letters of invitation, regret, acceptance, apology.
