Computer Communications and Networks

(DC) Domain Core Theory: 3 Cr. Hrs Total: 3 Cr. Hrs
Objectives: Main objective of the course is to discuss the fundamental problems in computer networking. The course takes a top-down approach to networking by considering functioning and interaction of various layers of the protocol stack. The course enables students to identify, formulate, and solve the network problems with a particular emphasis on the Internet.

Contents: Architecture; Application Layer: Principles of Application Layer Protocols: The World Wide Web (WWW), File Transfer (FTP), Electronic Mail (SMTP, POP, IMAP, MIME) and Domain Name System (DNS); Transport Layer: Transport Layer Services: Multiplexing and De-multiplexing Services: Connection less Transport - UDP: Reliable Data Transfer TCP: Principles of Congestion Control; Network Layer: Network Service Model: Internet Protocol - IP: Routing in Networks and Routing in Internet; Link Layer: Introduction and Services: Multiple Access Protocols and Local Area Networks (LANs): Ethernet: Hubs and Switches, the point-to-point protocol (PPP); Wireless and Mobile Networks: Introduction to Wireless Networks: Wireless LAN IEEE 802.11: Introduction to Mobile Networks; Multimedia Networking: Multimedia Networking Applications: Audio and Video Streaming.
