Operating Systems

(DC) Domain Core Theory: 3 Cr. Hrs Total: 3 Cr. Hrs
Objectives: Main objective of the course is focused towards theoretical as we as practical aspect of operating systems. The course will enable the students to practice the basic theoretical understandings of different components of an Operating System. Students will get in-depth knowledge by implementing various parts of an Operating System.

Contents: Introduction to Operating System; Operating System Fundamentals; Types of Operating Systems; Computing Environments and Operating Systems; Operating System Services, Interfaces; Call Types, and Programs; Operating System Design and implementation. Memory Management: Contiguous VS. Non-Contiguous Storage Allocation, Fixed VS. Variable Partition Multiprogramming; Virtual Memory Management: Block Mapping, Paging and Segmentation Systems, Program behaviour under paging segmentation systems, Page replacement Strategies; Process Management: Process Concept, Process Scheduling; Inter-process Communication: Remote Procedure Call and Local Procedure Calls; Process synchronization; Multithreading and Multithreading Models; Process Deadlocks: Deadlock Characterization and Handling, Deadlock Prevention, Avoidance, Detection and Recovery Strategies; I/O management: Disk Scheduling algorithms, file sharing and protection.
