Computer Organization and Assembly Language

Theory: 3 Cr. Hrs Total: 3 Cr. Hrs
Objectives: Main objectives of the course is to develop basic understand of computers and their components at theoretical as well as practical level. The theoretical aspect of computers, basic components of computers, and interconnection of basic components will be discussed in the course. Assembly language programming is also included in the course.

Contents: Hardware Components; Computer Organization and Architecture, Computer Structure and Functions; Interconnection Structures; New Trends in Computer Architectures and Organizations. Address space, op-code, operands; Instruction format and expansion; Addressing Modes; Instruction cycle and Interrupts. Interconnection Structure, Reduced and Complex Instruction sets; Instruction Execution in SISD, MIMD, MISD, MIMD; Assembly Language programming and architectures; Assembly language programming basics; Program development in Assembly language: Arthematic and logic operations; Program layout; Modules and argument passing; String Instructions and arrays; Macros and Structures; Cache: organization, design, mapping functions and replacement algorithms; Primary Memory: organization, error detection and correction techniques, and advance types; External Memory: Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks; Storage technology in ROM, EPROM, EEPROM, EPROM, and Flash Memory; I/O Module: organization; programmed and interrupt driven I/O, Direct Memory Access, I/O channels and processes; Central Processing Unit: micro-controller architecture, softwired and hardwired control unit, execution of microinstruction.
