Introduction to Computer Organization

(DC) Domain Core Theory: 3 Cr. Hrs Total: 3 Cr. Hrs
Objectives: Main objective of the course is to provide an introduction to how basic building blocks of a computer system are designed. Students will learn how basic building blocks are designed using gates and circuits (Combinational and sequential logic) and how computers internally execute instructions.

Contents: Introduction to the course; Types of Computers; Overview of Computer System (Von Neumann Architecture); Review of Number Systems; Internal representation of data/information; Truth Tables; Functions of Boolean Expressions: Boolean Algebra; Basic building blocks of digital computers; Simplification of Functions; Combinational Circuit Design: Adders, Subtractors, Comparators, Decoders, Multiplexers; Sequential Circuits: Introduction to Latches and Flip-Flops; Sequential Circuits Design; Registers and Counters: Shift Registers, Parallel Loading of Registers, Synchronous and Asynchronous Counters; Design of Memory Unit; Design of Arithmetic Logic Unit and design of Control Unit; Machine Instruction; Simple Machine Instruction Set; Instruction Cycle; Internal working of computer systems: Instruction execution using simple machine instruction set.
